A mall suitor

I'm writing this down so that I don't forget this hilarious moment.

As I was walking around the mall with my friend M the other day, I noticed in the corner of my eye a guy accompanied by a few friends hesitantly walking by and looking in our direction. After he gained some courage, he walked up to us and asked me: "Excuse me, do you have a boyfriend?"

Stunned by the sudden interest, I replied: "I have a husband, actually."

"Oh, okay. Have a nice day" he said, and walked away.

A gift

I happily celebrated the first married birthday, and the first ever to be spending with the boo. For the past four years we've always been apart on my birthday. This year was the time to fix it!

This is what the hubby got me. He left a handwritten note in Slovak with it: "Because you are an Africanist, a sociologist and a woman."

My first reaction was to take a happy birthday nap, reading the poems to calm me down before dozing off. 

He knows me well.

This inscription over a classroom building caught my eye the other day. It's a good reminder as to why I am even working on this campus, and really, anywhere I go. How often do I fall short of this advice though!
